With the time spent home-educating my children, I discovered the tremendous benefits of abacus-based math instruction coupled with academic empowerment strategies. When I returned to full-time work, I realized that I needed a different set of strategies that would fit (as many of us mothers try to do). I needed to fit work, school, and kids’ activities in addition to a solid home-education program.
I spent a large part of my career teaching college preparation courses to high school students. This experience combined with having my own children made me realize how important the first few years of a child’s education and disposition towards education plays such a huge role in their academic efficacy, their projected college entry desires and actual outcomes. Becoming a parent made me really see the huge gap that exists between what skills young children are capable of and what skills they are expected to learn before entering first grade. I discovered that we, parents, can do so much to bridging those gaps, despite the everyday demands of our daily lives.
This e-course is the result of many trials, errors and discoveries of success with strategies that helped me establish the love of learning and the development of a solid math foundation in my twin girls. See my blog on how I discovered the abacus here.
